Final Reflection
From Classroom Practitioner to Educational Researcher: A Reflection on the Research Writing Process
by Adriana Bernaldez
This learning portfolio marks a significant turning point in my professional development, documenting my transition from an experienced classroom practitioner to an emerging educational researcher. Throughout this academic year, my understanding of research writing underwent a profound shift, changing my view of text production from a model of basic knowledge-telling to one of active knowledge construction. I began to recognize academic writing as a process of exploring questions, building arguments, and contributing knowledge.
At the beginning of the course, I considered research mainly as an academic activity focused on presenting established ideas. However, engaging with different stages of research paper writing showed me that educational research is a dynamic, reflective, and carefully planned process. I learned that a successful research project requires coherence between the research problem, literature review, research questions, and methodological decisions. Developing my proposal on "Standards and Identity Shifts: The Negotiation of Professional Identity by EFL Teachers in the Province of Buenos Aires" helped me understand how an initial educational concern can be transformed into a focused and feasible qualitative study.
One of the most valuable aspects of this process was learning how researchers organize and position their work within academic conversations. Through the analysis of abstracts, literature reviews, and research proposals, I became more aware of the rhetorical organization of academic writing, particularly Swales’ C.A.R.S. model. I understood that a literature review is a space where researchers connect previous studies, identify research opportunities, and establish the relevance of their own investigation.
This journey also involved the challenge of balancing theoretical depth with clarity and conciseness. My initial approach emphasized detailed explanations as a way of demonstrating understanding. Through my instructor’s feedback, I developed greater awareness of the importance of synthesis, prioritization, and maintaining a clear focus on the research purpose. The comments on my final proposal supported my growth by encouraging me to strengthen connections between studies, clarify key concepts such as professional identity, and continue refining academic conventions.
My main strengths throughout this experience were my engagement with research literature, my ability to develop coherent sections of a research paper, and my capacity to connect educational discussions with specific contexts. I continue developing greater precision in academic writing, concise expression, and attention to research conventions. Overall, this course provided me with valuable tools to bridge teaching practice and research, allowing me to participate more actively and confidently in academic writing and educational inquiry.
