Unit 3 - Grammar and Mechanics: What is the problem with the paragraph?
By Adriana Bernaldez
I selected this analytical task because it allowed me to examine the role of cohesion and transitions in creating a clear and logical academic text. The activity focused on identifying the main issue affecting the paragraph structure and recognizing how the lack of linking expressions can interrupt the relationship between ideas.
Through this analysis, I identified that the paragraph presented relevant information and maintained a clear topic. However, the progression of ideas could be improved through the use of more effective transitions. The text moved from one event or explanation to another without enough guidance for the reader, which affected the overall flow and coherence of the argument.
This task helped me understand that academic writing requires more than accurate grammar and vocabulary. Writers need to establish connections between ideas so that readers can easily follow the development of the discussion. Using cohesive devices such as sequencing markers, contrastive connectors, and cause-effect relationships strengthens the organization of a text.
This activity contributed to my development as a researcher because it increased my awareness of rhetorical choices in academic writing. It showed me that revision involves analyzing how meaning is constructed and ensuring that each part of a text contributes to a coherent and effective argument.
